Agrima Deedwania

I'm currently a DPhil student in the BBSRC DTP Interdisciplinary Bioscience program at the University of Oxford, based in the Department of Engineering Science. I am supervised by Harrison Steel and co-supervised by Jani Bolla. My research lies at the intersection of synthetic biology, microfluidics, and antimicrobial resistance (AMR), where I investigate bacterial behaviour and engineer synthetic biological systems for high-throughput single-cell studies. Previously, I worked as a Biotech Junior Research Scientist at a MedTech startup Inito, where I developed POC based diagnostic testing kits. Prior to that, I graduated with a Bachelors in Biochemical Engineering and Biotechnology from IIT Delhi in May 2022.

My research interests lie in synthetic biology and molecular engineering in the field of healthcare and sustainability with a combination of computational and wet lab work. At IITD, I was fortunate enough to collaborate closely with Prof. Preeti Srivastava on protein engineering. In my free time, I like to travel, play badminton and listen to Indie music.

Research

My current research lies at the intersection of synthetic biology, microfluidics, and antimicrobial resistance (AMR). I develop mother machine microfluidic platforms to study bacterial behaviour at the single-cell level, combining experimental and computational approaches to better understand microbial dynamics and enable the design of engineered biological systems. My interest in synthetic biology began during my bachelor's degree. At my previous position at Inito, I worked on developing home testing kits for whole blood assay for various hormones. This involved identifying the problems existing in whole blood assays and also attempting to solve them. I used synthetic biology approaches like protein engineering to develop synthetic antibodies for the tests that would give better performance and results.

Over the past few years I have built my skills in mutational library preparation, microscopy, automation, protein engineering, protein expression and purification, structure prediction and docking, designing biomolecular systems, CRN modeling and simulation and various molecular biology techniques. The details of my completed research work are mentioned on the research page. With my interest in synthetic biology, I aim to make biomolecular systems that would potentially be used in real-world applications such as healthcare and sustainability.

News

October 2025: My paper on Native mass spectrometry of membrane proteins reconstituted in peptidiscs got published in RCS Chemical Biology.

August 2024: Started as a DPhil Student at Steel Lab - Supervised by Harrison Steel and co-supervised by Jani Bolla at the Department of Engineering. My research focuses on developing mother machine microfluidic platforms to investigate bacterial behaviour at the single-cell level, with applications in understanding antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and advancing synthetic biology.

April 2024: Started with Steel Lab as a rotation student. My work will focus on developing and establishing a scalable method for generating large protein libraries. As a proof of concept, I will apply this approach to green fluorescent protein (GFP) to engineer variants with altered excitation and emission spectra.

January 2024: Started with Bolla Group as a rotation student. My work will focus on reconstituting membrane proteins into peptidiscs and demonstrating their potential for native mass spectrometry and related structural biology applications.

November 2023: My work on construction and catecterization of temperature sensitive pRC4 replicon got accepted in Gene! Link to the paper

March 2023: Got offered a DPhil position at BBSRC DTP Interdisciplinary Bioscience program at the University of Oxford.

November 2022: Graduated with a Bachelors (B.Tech) in Biochemical Engineering and Biotechnology from IIT Delhi.

October 2022: Won gold medal at iGEM 2022 competition. Advisor and mentor to the iGEM IIT Delhi team.

June 2022: Joined Inito, a MedTech healthcare startup as a Biotech Junior Research Scientist.

July 2021: Revived the synthetic biology IIT Delhi club. Appointed as the Overall student coordinator of the student team for the year 2021-22.

March 2021: Joined Prof. Preeti Srivastava's lab as undergraduate researcher to work on B.Tech Thesis Project.

May 2020: Joined Prof. Richard Murray's lab as Summer Undergraduate Research Scholar at Caltech.

October 2019: Presented the poster on the work on RNA thermometers in IRD 1234 Discover and learn conference.

August 2019: Joined Prof. Shaunak Sen's lab as an undergraduate researcher for RNA thermometers project, granted the IRD 1234 Discover and learn award.

June 2018: Joined IIT Delhi as an engineering undergrad, majoring in Biochemical Engineering and Biotechnology.
